Why the Rafto Foundation is leaving X
The Rafto Foundation has worked dedicated to the global promotion of human rights for decades. Social media has been an essential tool in our advocacy, allowing us to amplify the voices of human rights defenders and connect with a global audience. However, the recent developments on X have made it clear that we can no longer remain on the platform in good conscience.
As a human rights organization, we believe that digital spaces should foster constructive dialogue, protect vulnerable communities, and counteract the spread of harmful rhetoric. It is now clear that X has increasingly failed in these areas.
- The rise of hate speech – X’s insufficient response to the significant increase in hate speech and discriminatory content, creates an unsafe environment for the very people we seek to support.
- Weakened content moderation – The decision to scale back moderation policies and reduce staff responsible for addressing harmful content has resulted in the unchecked spread of misinformation. This undermines poses a real risk to human rights activists worldwide.
- The amplification of harmful narratives – Algorithmic changes have prioritized engagement over truth, leading to the promotion of divisive and extremist content. This contradicts our mission to promote human rights and human dignity.
By leaving X, we make it clear that we refuse to lend credibility to a platform that no longer upholds the fundamental principles of human rights. Instead, we will continue our work through our own channels, such as rafto.no and our newsletter.
We encourage our supporters to sign up for our newsletter to stay updated on human rights.
