LGBTQ+ community in Uganda faces crisis amid USAID suspension

Rafto laureate and leader of Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG) Frank Mugisha has raised alarm over the severe impact this decision is having on essential services and the well-being of marginalized communities.

"The United States suspension of foreign aid has left the LGBTQ+ community and other key populations in Uganda struggling so much," Mugisha stated. He emphasized that critical services supporting the LGBTQ+ community, particularly in HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and support, are being shut down. These services are lifelines for many and their closure poses a serious public health risk.

Beyond healthcare, the suspension has also disrupted programs providing safety and protection for LGBTQ+ individuals. "We are seeing the much-needed support that was going to the communities in terms of safety and protection being stopped," Mugisha explained. This loss of assistance has intensified the fear and uncertainty faced by the LGBTQ+ community and civil society organizations.

"Communities are worried. LGBTQ community members, civil society are frightened and scared right now. We do not know where the next support is going to come from," Mugisha shared, highlighting the growing anxiety and insecurity. The suspension of aid has created heightened vulnerability, leaving those already at risk in an even more precarious situation.
